The flow of rights and royalties
To an artist a song is like a baby, something you created that is a reflection of yourself. In the eyes of the law however it is a series of property interests (most of which don't belong to you). Though the particulars of a song's property interest depends on the specific contract and use of the work, the following flowchart is illustrative of the various ways royalties can flow in the music business.
2 From Byrne
Amongst other things this blog will serve as a digital filing cabinet for some of the more interesting articles I have read over the years. The following two though substantively different both come to us from David Byrne.
The First one entitled David Byrne's Survival Strategies for Emerging Artists — and Megastars, speaks of the various business models in music today and the scenarios that can lead an artist to a successful career.
The Second one is a talk on the role of the venue in the evolution of music
David Byrne: How architecture helped music evolve | Video on TED.com
Two great commentaries one great mind.

Welcome...
"The time has come," the Blogger said,
"To talk of many things:
From Copyrights to Copywrongs--
To Music Publishing--
Plus news, reviews, and who sues who--
And what the future brings."
Greetings and welcome to Music Law and More. This blog will focus on how the various aspects of the music industries are impacted and influenced by the law. For this first post I have linked an essay that presents general information on Music and Copyright Law in the United States. Though by no means exhaustive, it is a worthy read and a fitting introduction to this field of study.

Enjoy.
